Col du Petit Saint-Bernard: exceptional closure from 22 September 2025
The Col du Petit Saint-Bernard, linking Savoie with the Aosta Valley at 2,188 metres, has been closed to traffic since 22 September 2025.
This closure comes earlier than usual, as the road normally remains open well into autumn. It is due to this year’s roadworks and safety improvements.
A legendary Alpine pass
- A historic crossroads: used since Roman times, it still features archaeological remains and the statue of Saint Bernard of Menthon.
- Breathtaking views: from the summit, travellers enjoy stunning panoramas over both the French and Italian Alps.
- A lively summer spot: each season, cyclists, hikers and travellers gather to cross this natural link between the two countries.
What to do around La Rosière this autumn
Even though the road is closed, La Rosière remains a perfect base for autumn activities:
- Explore hiking trails still accessible around the resort.
- Admire the autumn colours and peaceful atmosphere of the mountains.
- Discover the local heritage and traditions of Haute-Tarentaise.
See you in 2026
The Col du Petit Saint-Bernard will reopen in spring, as soon as conditions allow. We will announce the reopening date as soon as it is confirmed, since, as every year, this symbolic moment will be celebrated with festivities and events.
